Akrotiri, Santorini. Luxury villa holiday guide and information.
General destination; holiday guide and information.
Excavations in the area brought up the city of Acropolis, a fortified Venetian castle during the medieval years, which after the occupation of Santorini by the Turks was torn down. The remains of the castle are easily visible. There are two old churches in the village, Aghia Triada and Ipapandi tou Sotiros. As you are taking the road to Akrotiri, on your right, you will stay amazed from the fascinating view of the Caldera. The picturesque atmosphere by the view towards Fira and Oia will rivet you. There are many hotels around the area and also many taverns.
The excavations in the area brought to light the settlement known as the City of Akrotiri. You shouldn"t miss the Archaeological site of Akrotiri.
The covered remains of Akrotiri are unnervingly quiet, as if not only the ancient inhabitants but also the modern archaeologists have just fled from an impending disaster. All around us are brown walls, most only half-height, enclosing small rooms stripped of all detail. The lives -and fates- of the occupants are a mystery.

Things to do, excursions and trips while on holiday.
Oia Village: Picturesque Oia - If you"re going to Santorini, then there is a very good chance that you will be visiting Oia at some point.
This spectacularly located white-washed village sits precariously on the edge of the red and black cliffs overlooking the deep blue sea, and is widely regarded as Santorini"s "must see" sight.
In terms of its appearance and location it is similar to the island"s capital, Fira. But somehow it is even more spectacular.
Fira, Imerovigli and Firostefani: Fira - By Night - If you think Fira looks good by day you should see it by night! In the half hour or so after sunset as the light fades more and more the city lights up in an array of twinkling lights reflecting colour from the whitewashed walls of the buildings.
Akrotiri Excavations: A trip to the ancient world - is located 12 kilometers at the S.W of Fira and is a very important archaeological site. The Professor Marinatos began the excavations in 1967 and step by step the scientists are discovering a whole community which was inhabited 3.000 years B.C. and destroyed by an eruption 1.500 years B.C. The place is awesome, because the ashes of the volcano covered suddenly the town preserving it in almost perfect conditions until today.
Volcano: Sails to the Caldera - Boats departs every morning in a round trip to the caldera. Hot springs turns the sea yellow and temp grow ups like a bath. The site is impressive and the magma is only 2000 meters underground. Magnificent view of the rest of the islands.
